Painting kitchen cabinets yourself costs €77 - €150 in materials and a few days of work. Hiring a painter costs €38 - €77 per door, which is €770 - €1,550 for the entire kitchen. The effect lasts 2-4 years under real kitchen conditions. Before painting, check what your doors are made of, this determines if it's even worth it.

What Your Kitchen Cabinets Are Made Of and Why It Matters

Not every door reacts the same way to paint. The substrate material determines the durability of the final effect, ignoring this step is the most common reason for peeling paint after a year.

Door Material Is it worth painting? What to check before painting
Lacquered MDF Yes - best candidate Condition of lacquer, no swelling
Foil-wrapped MDF Possible, more difficult Is the foil firmly adhered
Laminate / Melamine Risky - requires an adhesion primer Type of primer, adhesion test
Veneer / Wood Yes, but requires experience Condition of veneer, no delamination
Swollen / Damaged Door No - paint will not fix the substrate -

If you don't know what you have, examine the edges of the doors. The cross-section will show if it's MDF, laminate, or veneer. A door swollen at the edges is not suitable for painting, the paint will come off with the edge banding.

What You Really Need - The Minimum List That Works

Not a supermarket list, but what truly determines the durability of the effect. Cheap substitutes in any of these categories mean touch-ups in a year.

  • Kitchen Cabinet Paint - specialized, resistant to steam, abrasion, and washing. Not "all-purpose" or "latex" paint. Manufacturers: Ghiant, Chalk Paint Annie Sloan, Magnat Style Premium, Dulux Trade.
  • Adhesion-Promoting Primer - essential for foil-wrapped doors and laminate, recommended for every door.
  • Sandpaper 180-240 grit or P180 sanding sponge - for dulling the surface before priming.
  • Degreaser (acetone or specialized) - without this step, the paint will not last. Kitchens have invisible grease on every surface.
  • Flock roller 10-15 cm or spray gun - a brush leaves visible streaks after drying.
  • Painter's tape - to protect hinges and screws that remain in the door.

Good quality materials cost €77 - €130 for a typical kitchen with 15-18 doors. Saving on €10 paint instead of €31 often results in repeating the work.

How to Repaint Kitchen Cabinets Step-by-Step

The following process works, it skips shortcuts that most often ruin the final effect. Time: 2-3 days (including drying between coats).

Step 1: Disassemble Doors

Remove the doors, handles, and hinges. Painting doors while they are hanging on cabinets leads to drips and unevenness. Work on each door horizontally, on supports. Hinges and handles: clean separately or replace, this is a good time to replace worn components.

Step 2: Degreasing

This is the most important step, and the most frequently skipped. Kitchens are always greasy, even if the doors look clean. Wipe each surface with acetone or a dedicated degreaser, wait 15 minutes, wipe again with a clean cloth. Without this, the primer and paint will not adhere, regardless of their quality.

Step 3: Matting (Sanding)

Using P180 sandpaper or a sanding sponge, sand the entire surface, not down to the raw material, but just to dullness. The goal is to give the paint something to adhere to. After matting, wipe off the dust with a dry cloth, then degrease again.

Step 4: Primer

Apply a thin coat of primer with a flock roller. For foil-wrapped doors and laminate, use an adhesion primer (e.g., Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 or Rustoleum). Drying time: according to manufacturer's instructions, usually 1-2 hours. Do not shorten, primer that has not dried properly will not serve its purpose.

Step 5: Painting - Two Thin Coats

First coat: thin, even. After drying, light sanding with P220 paper and dust removal. Second coat: the target color. Do not touch up fresh paint, going over an area that is starting to dry with a roller creates streaking. Apply the paint and leave it. Drying time between coats: minimum 4 hours, preferably 8.

Step 6: Curing - The Most Frequently Skipped Step

Dry paint is not the same as durable paint. Most furniture paints reach full hardness after 7-14 days. During this time, avoid aggressive cleaning and excessive moisture. A door that looks ready after 2 hours will scratch with a fingernail for the first week. This is normal and will pass, do not sand again.

How Long Will It Last - Realistic Expectations

A well-executed paint job will last 3-5 years under normal kitchen conditions. The areas around the handles and the edges of the doors wear out the fastest, that's where the paint is most exposed to mechanical abrasion. A damp cloth, hot steam from pots, grease, this is a challenging environment for any paint, even good quality ones.

After 2-3 years, the most common issues are scuffs near handles, chips on edges, and slight dulling of color. With professional lacquer from a paint shop, the results are better, the lacquer is applied with a spray gun in controlled conditions, which yields a smoother and harder surface than DIY.

Painting vs. Replacing Doors - When to Choose Which

This is not an ideological decision, but a calculation. Repainting a kitchen by a professional painter costs €770 - €1,550 and provides an effect for 3-5 years. New doors for IKEA METOD or FAKTUM cost (price for lacquered in the configurator - medium kitchen - estimated range, the configurator will calculate precisely) and provide an effect for 10-15 years. If you do it professionally, the cost difference is smaller than you think, and the durability difference is very significant.

Criterion Painting (DIY) Painting (professional painter) New Doors
Cost (15 doors) €77 - €150 €770 - €1,550 €1,650 - €3,050
Durability 1-3 years 3-5 years 10-15 years
Visual Effect Refreshed old door Better, but same shape New kitchen
Risk of Failure High Low-medium Minimal
Kitchen Downtime Several days without kitchen Several days without kitchen One day of installation

When Painting MAKES Sense

Painting is a good solution in specific situations, not every one. It makes sense when the doors are in very good technical condition (no swelling, strong veneer), the kitchen is temporary (e.g., a rental apartment), the budget is limited to €130, and you accept that the effect will last 2-3 years. In other cases, especially if you want a long-lasting effect, it's better to consider new custom-sized doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can kitchen cabinets be repainted without sanding?

Technically yes, some adhesion primers eliminate the need for sanding. In practice, matting with P180 paper takes 2 hours and significantly improves paint adhesion. Skipping this step halves the durability of the effect. If you care about good quality, sand.

What is the best paint for kitchen cabinets?

Paint specifically for kitchen or bathroom furniture, resistant to washing, steam, and scratches. Avoid "all-purpose" acrylic paints, they have poor hardness after drying. Good choices: Dulux Trade Diamond Matt, Ghiant H2O Furniture, Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matt for a chalky effect.

Does painting laminate doors make sense?

Only with an adhesion primer and after thorough degreasing. Laminate is smooth and does not readily accept paint, without a good primer, the paint will peel within a few months. For laminate, it's worth considering whether the cost of a good primer + paint + labor doesn't come close to the cost of new doors.

How long do painted kitchen cabinets last?

With professional execution (painter, spray gun, good paint) - 3-5 years. DIY with roller and store-bought paint - 1-2 years with intensive use. The areas around the handles and the edges of the doors wear out the fastest. Full paint curing takes 7-14 days, avoid intensive use during this time.

What is cheaper long-term: painting or new doors?

New doors. Painting every 3-4 years (even DIY) involves the cost of materials + time. New lacquered doors for the METOD system are calculated by the configurator per door and last 10-15 years without renovation. For a 15-door kitchen, the cost of DIY painting repeated every 3 years for 12 years = 4 repetitions × €130 = €510. New doors, price from the configurator (one-time), but the effect is qualitatively different.
